Hand-painted perfection for effortlessly sun-kissed hair

Balayage is a hand-painted color method that gives you sun-kissed highlights with rich depth. Unlike foil highlights, balayage is painted by hand. As a result, your stylist places color on select sections to create a lived-in look that’s all yours.

This French method grows out softly, so you won’t see harsh lines at the roots. That means more time between salon visits.

At The Refinery Hair Lounge in Middletown, KY, our colorists do both partial and full balayage. For example, partial balayage frames your face and adds brightness to the top layers. On the other hand, full balayage gives you all-over lift and lighter results.

Both work on all hair colors. For instance, we lighten brunettes and add warmth to blondes. Each service includes a chat about your goals, hand-painted color, toning, and a treatment to keep your hair healthy.

The result is easy-care color that looks natural and suits your life. We serve Louisville, Prospect, Norton Commons, and La Grange.

Frequently Asked Questions

Balayage is painted by hand for a softer, more natural look. Specifically, color goes on the surface of hair, not all the way through. As a result, you get a sun-kissed effect that blends well. It also grows out nicely, so you can wait 3-4 months between visits instead of 6-8 weeks.
Balayage lasts 3-4 months before you need a refresh. However, some clients go 6 months if they like a more grown-out look. Because the blend at the roots is soft, grow-out looks on purpose. Use color-safe products to keep your color bright longer.
Partial balayage adds brightness to your face-framing pieces, top layers, and crown—it’s subtle and great for upkeep. In contrast, full balayage covers your whole head for more lift and all-over lightness. Your stylist will suggest the best option for your goals.
Most visits take 2.5 to 4 hours. However, it depends on your hair length, thickness, and current color. This time covers your chat, color, processing, toning, and styling. Your stylist will give you a better time estimate at your consult.
Balayage is often gentler than foil highlights because color is placed only where needed, not on every strand. Plus, we use bond builders and pro products to protect your hair. As a result, good home care with color-safe shampoo keeps it healthy.
Yes! Balayage works great on dark brown and black hair. For instance, we create caramel, honey, or bronze tones that add warmth without harsh contrast. Your colorist will talk about what’s doable in one visit or if you need a few sessions.
First, use color-safe, sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. Then wash 2-3 times per week with cool or warm water. If you have blonde balayage, use purple shampoo once a week. Also, deep condition weekly and use heat protectant when styling. Finally, stay away from pools or wet your hair first.
